why we never switched to tallow
a note on trends, trusting your gut, and why i'm still loyal to avocado and mango.
every few months, someone asks me if we're going to start making products with tallow.
and honestly, i get why.
tallow is one of the most talked-about ingredients in skincare right now. but i knew it long before it was a trend. i knew it from the kitchen. people have cooked with it for generations. then a few of my favorite hippies at the farmers market started making skincare with it. the conversations grew. the products multiplied. before long it was everywhere.
of course i was curious. i'm a forever student. thirty-plus years in bodywork and coaching, and the thing that's kept me in love with this work is that i never stop wanting to learn. so yes. i've tried tallow. sourced it locally. used it. formulated with it. and i completely understand why some people love it.
but the one i keep coming back to is the same thing i've made by hand since 2007. avocado and mango. and this summer, in a stick. it glides on clean, no rubbing in, and never asks you to dig into a tub when it's ninety-five degrees out.

the advice that changed everything
my dad used to tell me one thing, over and over.
"cool is trusting your gut. being your best self. not following what other people do, wear, or say."
i didn't know it at the time, but that line shaped almost every decision i've made in business.
i'm not a trendy person by nature. that doesn't mean i'm closed. it's the opposite. i love learning. i just don't feel the need to chase every new thing that comes along. when a trend shows up, i want to understand it. i want to know why. and then i decide if it actually fits what i believe.
when i started making products nearly twenty years ago, i wasn't trying to be trendy. i was trying to solve a problem. my massage clients wanted something nourishing that felt incredible on their skin, without adding more chemicals, synthetic fragrance, or filler to their lives.
why i chose avocado and mango
so i started researching oils and butters. and what fascinated me was how differently they each felt on the skin.
i learned about oleic content and absorption rates. i tested ingredient after ingredient, looking for something deeply nourishing that didn't feel heavy, sticky, or suffocating. because if you've ever finished a massage and wanted to wipe every bit of oil off with the sheet before getting dressed, you know exactly the feeling i was trying to avoid.
here's what kept winning:
- avocado butter, rich but it sinks in instead of sitting on top
- mango butter, nourishing without the greasy film
- calendula-infused oils, calm and gentle on changing skin
- no water, no fillers, just what your skin recognizes as food
they absorbed beautifully. they delivered without leaving anyone coated. so i stayed. not because they were trendy. because they worked.
my unofficial focus group
when my clients came in for their massages, they started asking for something else on their way out. more butter. they'd tell me their dry patches were calming down. their rough, almost alligator-like skin was softening. the crepey skin on their arms looked smoother. the irritation was easing.
the stories kept coming. and nineteen years later, they still do.
that's why i've never felt much pressure to chase the next ingredient. not because i'm against them. tallow people love their tallow, shea people love their shea, and i'm glad anytime someone's paying closer attention to what they put on their body. that's a win. i just already found the thing i believe in.
the difference nobody talks about
there's one more piece.
our products were made to support my bodywork clients between sessions. that's why we have intentions instead of fragrances. the essential oils were never added to cover something up. they were added to support something.
this post lives in balance. bergamot, orange, chamomile. bergamot lifts your mood and quiets stress. orange is calming and rich in the antioxidants your skin loves. chamomile soothes irritated skin and helps settle a frayed nervous system. together, they're here to help you find your middle ground.
and here's the part i come back to again and again:
your intention doesn't change how the product works. it changes the experience.
the avocado and mango do the work, every single time. the balance blend just decides how it feels while it happens.
the sticks are interesting, though. they carry an intention too. it just changed shape. instead of a mood, you're choosing a level of skin support. daily, unscented, for everyday. intensive, for the patches that need more. same base, same idea. the intention just points at your skin now instead of your nervous system. the aromatherapy intentions, like balance, live in the oils and butters, where the experience is the whole point.
and if i'm honest, i love cooking with tallow. i just don't love smelling like it. i'll save that for my skillet.
still the avocado and mango lady
if charlie, my kiddo, ever asks me why we don't make tallow, i'll probably laugh and say: other people make tallow. we make avocado and mango.
trends come and go. what works stays. for nineteen years i've stayed loyal to avocado butter, mango butter, and our calendula-infused oils. not because they're trendy. because they work. just roll it onto dry skin and go. no warming, no rubbing, nothing left on your hands. that's the whole ritual.

ps. the butter sticks are our summer answer to the tub. same avocado and mango, easy to travel with, no melting on the shelf.
