why we refused to water it down. same butter. smarter format.

nineteen years in, we still won't cut corners. here's why — and what we did instead.

why we refused to water it down. same butter. smarter format.

there are a lot of ways we could have made our butter easier for summer.

we could have watered it down.
added fillers.
used emulsifying chemicals.
changed the formula so it behaved more like a traditional lotion.

that probably would have made my life easier too.

but i've never been interested in products that feel good for five minutes and leave. i care about what happens to your skin over time — what happens when you consistently give it ingredients it actually recognizes as food. after 19 years of listening to customer stories and working hands-on with bodies, i trust that philosophy more than ever.

the formula was never the problem. what i finally figured out — the problem was getting it to you.

what summer actually does to your skin

people think winter is the hard season. but honestly, summer is just as rough — in a completely different way.

sun. chlorine. salt water. heat. sand.

all of it slowly pulls support from the skin. and when skin gets depleted, it shows up:

  • rough texture and tightness
  • dullness, itchiness, that feeling of tight skin after the sun
  • more visible crepiness — especially shins, arms, hands
  • the kind of dry that no amount of light lotion fixes

i always tell people: think about what happens when you keep licking your lips. they don't get softer. they get more dry, more irritated, more flaky. summer skin works the same way.

your intention doesn't change how the product works — it changes the experience. but either way, your skin responds to what you actually give it.

wait until you accidentally get a little too much summer. normally: tightness, itching, that awful hot feeling in the shower. then apply butter. the stories people send us still amaze me. skin calms down. less irritation. more comfort almost immediately.

if consistent nourishment does that for stressed summer skin — imagine what it does when you support it every single day.

the case for hard butter

our butter is intentionally firm. hard butter makes the softest skin.

we made it that way on purpose. the formula is packed densely with real ingredients — avocado butter, mango butter, kokum butter, calendula-infused jojoba. no water. no fillers. no shortcuts. a little goes a very long way.

most watered-down lotions disappear fast and leave you reapplying without ever really changing your skin. our butter is different. you use less, stay consistent, and your skin actually responds over time.

but for years, summer life and rich body butter didn't always work together very well.

real butter melts. in your purse. in the car. during shipping. at the pool. on vacation. and depending on how much it melts and re-solidifies, texture changes can happen — graininess, hardness that didn't used to be there.

we've spent years adjusting ratios, testing shipments across the country, trying to improve the experience — all without touching the integrity of the butter itself.

because i was never willing to weaken the formula just to make the format easier.

what we've been quietly sitting on

this year brought a lot of change behind the scenes at hellomellow.

and for the first time in a long time, i sat quietly with one question: what would make this summer feel better than ever?

i finally trusted my gut and brought an idea to life i'd been holding onto for years.

butter sticks.

same nourishment. smarter format.

and because summer skin doesn't always need the same level of support everywhere, we ended up creating two:

daily — our unscented everyday butter stick. for hands, elbows, knees, dry patches mid-day. swipe it on wherever you are. done.

intensive — for the extra dry, rough, crepey spots that need more love. your shins. the backs of your arms. the places that show up every summer and remind you they exist.

the problem was never the butter. the problem was accessibility.

summer routines fall apart. people travel more. skin gets more depleted. life gets busier. and your butter couldn't always be there for you the way it needed to be.

until now.

hellomellow butter stick in daily use

i look down mid-day and think: whose dry hands are these?

i grab the stick, swipe it on, and that's it. all butter. no mess. no digging in a jar. no rubbing product off my hands first. just instant support exactly where i need it.

there's something emotional about that too.

when your skin feels dry, rough, crepey, uncomfortable — it changes how you feel in your body. you start wanting to cover up. avoid shorts. avoid sleeveless. and being able to shift that in one quick swipe? that feels like something real.

the funniest part is the whole family wants their own now. my husband is obsessed with how easy they are. my kiddo keeps stealing mine. i've started keeping them everywhere — my purse, my backpack, my desk, the car.

because summer skin usually needs more support, not less. and now your butter can finally keep up with your life.

same nourishment. smarter format. summer is about to get so much butter.
