why lotions stop working on dry skin

your skin isn't failing. it's asking for something different.

why lotions stop working on dry skin

one of the questions i get asked most often is, "why doesn't my lotion seem to work anymore?"

it's a good question. because years ago, i started asking the very same thing.

not because my skin suddenly looked dry. because something about the products i was using stopped making sense to me.

the more i learned, the more i realized i wasn't looking for a better lotion. i was looking for a better way to nourish my skin. that one shift changed everything.

i stopped looking for a better lotion

after massage school i traveled to learn bodywork from teachers around the world. everywhere i went, practitioners used different oils. whatever grew where they lived.

some felt wonderful. some felt sticky. some seemed to sink right in. others just sat on top.

i became fascinated. not because i wanted to make skincare. because i wanted to understand the body.

years later, while working on clients every day, i realized something. the products i was massaging into other people's skin all day were being absorbed into mine too.

so i started reading labels. then i started looking up the words i couldn't pronounce. the more i read, the more uncomfortable i got with what i was learning. and i couldn't unlearn it.

so i stopped asking "what's the best lotion?" and started asking "what actually nourishes living tissue?"

i stopped looking for better lotion. i started looking for better nourishment.

i didn't want to water it down

good stuff is good stuff.

another thing i hear all the time is "why don't your products have water in them?" because i don't want to water down nourishment.

think about dinner. a home-cooked meal and fast food are both food. they both fill your stomach. but they feed your body very differently.

i believe skincare is the same. real ingredients, real results.

so instead of starting with water, i started with things that already nourish skin. avocado. mango. calendula. olive. nature wrote an incredible recipe a long time ago. i just chose not to dilute it.

your skin isn't failing you

this might be the most important thing i say today.

your skin is living tissue. it changes based on what you keep asking of it.

when we're younger, our bodies hold onto moisture more easily. as we get older our hormones shift, and our skin shifts with them. it becomes drier, thinner, more crepey. what was plenty twenty years ago often isn't enough now.

that isn't a sign your skin is broken. it's a request. it's asking for something different.

and that's the hopeful part. if living tissue can change, your skin can change for the better too.

living tissue can change. which means it can change for the better.

don't think more. think different.

when skin starts feeling dry, most people reach for something stronger. a thicker cream. a bigger bottle.

i don't. i think about a plant.

when soil goes bone dry and you finally water it, the water runs straight through. the soil has forgotten how to hold on. skin can get the same way.

so instead of drowning it once a week, i'd rather nourish it a little every day.

consistency, not perfection.

that's why every morning after my shower, before i'm fully dry, i warm a little body oil between my palms and lightly apply it into damp skin. that's the whole thing. under two minutes.

small moments, repeated, have done more for my skin than any single product ever did on its own.

the two-minute version

  • step out of the shower
  • don't towel off all the way
  • warm a little body oil between your palms
  • apply it to damp skin
  • that's it. go start your day

what happened next

when i first started making these, i thought i was in the business of softer skin.

what surprised me was everything else. people slowed down. they took a few quiet minutes for themselves. they built a small ritual instead of rushing through one more task.

you take two minutes for your skin. then maybe you drink another glass of water. maybe you take a walk. maybe you get to bed a little earlier. little by little, it adds up.

that's why i've never thought of this as just moisturizer. it's one small way to remind yourself that you're worth taking care of.

one healthy choice has a way of leading to another.

i hope this helped you understand your skin a little better. take good care of yourself this week.

i'll be back next tuesday with another simple way to care for your body, and find a little more mellow along the way.
